1. Purpose

The Scott Henderson X-Cup Legacy Scholarship Fund is established to recognize and reward the dedication, technical skill, and sportsmanship of students participating in the annual Great Race. Our mission is to bridge the gap between historic automotive preservation and the next generation of enthusiasts by providing financial assistance for post-secondary education or trade certification.

By honoring students who demonstrate a "hands-on" commitment to their team and reliability under the pressure of competition, we aim to ensure the long-term sustainability of the vintage car hobby.

2. Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for a scholarship award, applicants must satisfy the following mandatory requirements:

  • Program Affiliation: Applicants must be active members of a recognized X-Cup Legacy program for the current race year.

  • Service Requirement (Pre-Race): Applicants must document a minimum of 15 hours of verified service with their team prior to the Great Race. Eligible activities include mechanical restoration, maintenance, fundraising, and public outreach.

  • Competition Requirement (In-Race): Candidates must have completed at least one full day of competition on the Great Race. Eligibility is strictly limited to students acting in the official capacity of Driver or Navigator.

Award Notification & Announcement

The official announcement of scholarship winners and their respective award amounts will take place at the conclusion of the Great Race during the final banquet. This public recognition honors the students' achievements in front of the racing community and sponsors.

Submission of Documentation

Following the announcement, X-Cup Legacy will collect the necessary institutional data from each recipient. X-Cup Legacy will then submit the recipient’s information, the award amount, and the appropriate mailing address to the financial office of the student’s designated advanced educational institution.

Terms of Acceptance

Before funds are disbursed, a Terms of Acceptance agreement will be sent to each scholarship recipient. This document must be signed and returned to X-Cup Legacy to verify the recipient’s intent to use the funds for qualified educational expenses and to provide the organization with a formal record of the grant agreement.

Disbursement of Funds

Once the signed Terms of Acceptance are received, X-Cup Legacy will draft a check to the student’s particular institution.

  • Direct Payment: Scholarship funds will be submitted directly to the enrolled educational institution for the benefit of the named student.

  • Qualified Expenses: In accordance with IRS regulations for 501(c)(3) organizations, funds may only be applied toward tuition, fees, or other costs directly associated with attending that institution. No funds will be paid directly to the individual student.

4. Selection Process

In compliance with IRS guidelines, scholarship recipients are chosen on an objective and non-discriminatory basis by a selection committee. Criteria for selection include the verified service hours, the advisor’s recommendation, and the student's performance and conduct during the Great Race.
